AMIDST THE DARKNESS CAUSED BY THE GLARING LACK OF NEON ILLUMINATIONS THESE DAYS, THE DOOMONGERS THAT TELL YOU HONG KONG IS DEAD ARE AS CLUELESS AS THE LEGISLATORS IN CHARGE TO REVIVE IT. LUCKILY KOWLOON & HONG KONG ARE RESILIENT AND CAN RELY ON IT’S COMMUNITY FOR A SPARK.
MOVING SWIFT-LY ON
Hong Kong’s reputation for an international global city is largely in tatters. The Inter Miami debacle and the dismal “Hello Hong Kong” campaign were laughably tragic, and proof that those responsible for governing the city, have legitimately no idea what makes it tick. Without any sense of irony, the HK Tourism Board has even promoted Hong Kong’s iconic neon signs as an attraction, despite removing over 90% of them in the last 5 years.
However, one thing that really irks us here at FCK, is the narrative that “Hong Kong is dead“, “wah wah wah no Taylor Swift“, “the city is doomed“; that there’s no life here, that it has lost its soul. To that, we say “DLLM 你他媽的錯了”!
There’s people here doing it; making shit happen. A vibrant burgeoning community of underground artists, musicians and DJs that are alive & kicking in the in-between spaces of HK and Kowloon life. The people that still call Hong Kong home, despite it’s recent challenges, are young, vibrant, edgy and providing real spotlight on Hong Kong culture.
Hong Kong has always been a mix; from true HK locals, to Chinese immigrants, 好多 gwei lo, a significant South Asian community as well as the HK born & raised third culture kids from all kinda mixed backgrounds. The East meets West narrative is somewhat cliched, but it is true in providing such diverse sounds and scenes.
M+ AT NIGHT
M+ Museum received a reasonable amount of criticism in the wake of its opening due to some perceived political influence & restrictions in some of its exhibitions. However its M+ At Night events which kicked off in January has proven to be a monthly hit; fusing modern art with a spin from local HK curators, as well as panel discussions, workshops and DJ sets from a series of upcoming musicians or well known collectives such as Yeti Out and Shi Fu Miz. Whether it’s discussing the nuances of street culture in Hong Kong, or celebrating the Canto pop disco culture, M+ has delivered some excellent diverse programming so far in 2024.
BAD TIMES CAN MEAN GOOD TIMES

Another staple of the Kowloon creative community is the Bad Times Record’s [BTR] shop, by Bad Times Disco located in Tsim Sha Tsui. Led by the inimitable & talented Ani Phoebe, BTR have fostered an amazing sense of community through their vinyl record shop. More than just a shop, they offer workshops in learning how to DJ, dance, speed dating, comedy nights, sustainability and tons more. We’ve done them an disservice actually because they are so much more, providing a safe queer space as well as highlighting social justice campaigns too. Check out their Insta page for more details on their monthly programming. As well as this, they also throw some great raves and parties in the hidden depths of the city, and strictly on vinyl of course!
KIOSK KEYS TO THE CITY
We’ll concede MAYBE the New York City skyline is as iconic as Hong Kong’s. Maybe. But what we bet NYC doesn’t have is a tiny little traditional drinks kiosk, selling bespoke Chinese tea, beers and local snacks under the lights of the skyline. All this whilst programming music from emergent artists in the city on the decks. Thursday to Sunday Kiosky HK run events and open decks to give a safe accessible space to emerging artists. Big names from the HK techno and wider underground music community like Tania & Angelika run the team behind Kiosky, ensuring that the space gives time and opportunity to exploring new directions and giving exposure to artists.
ABROAD
Yeah yeah yeah, I know you get it. We love Kowloon. Further afield into the depths of HK Island we of course also have plenty happening. From moody raves in industrial estates on south Island, or to the high-society projects like Magic Room, an electronic music collective which shares the same passion showcasing Hong Kong through their events. There’s hidden parties, walking tours, invite only collabs and a host of other hidden shit, which if you scratch the surface a little more, you can find. Honestly, it’s not always that easy. But that’s the fun. Firstly, it keeps the on9 away (and rugby crowd LOL, just kidding not kidding), but it also means a level of time-investment required. It means actually creating connections with these people and understanding the role that art and music has to play in place like Hong Kong.
If it was easy, everyone would be doing it; and if everyones doing the same shit, it’s shit. Might as well go to Singapore and fuck that.
There’s life in Hong Kong. You have to look past your nose, the bullshit headlines, the freaks at Lan Kwai Fong, and get into the heart and soul of the city. You’ll find it. And you’ll find the Kowloon heart of Hong Kong is beating strong.
